The focus should be on the fact we have the two best teams in the competition this year battling it out in what could be an epic fixture.

Losing a total of just two games in their 34 combined this season means there can be no arguments these two have not deserved a place in the final. It’s lethal attack taking on an incredible defence this weekend and Saturday promises to be an absorbing contest from the off.

The Lions’ come-from-behind victory over the Hurricanes showed just how far they have come and their performances in the final quarter of matches this term should be a big concern for the Crusaders – they’ve scored 30 tries in the closing 20 minutes, more than any other side.

On paper it seems plenty is leaning in the Lions’ favour and with South African teams having won 9 of their last 12 finals at home to New Zealand sides, it looks to be a tough ask for the visitors to upset their hosts. Are they about to give Johan Ackermann an ideal send-off?

Standing in their path is New Zealand’s strongest side this year, who have built their game on solid defence, which was typified in their quarter and semi-final. The Round 12 shut-out of a Hurricanes side that had averaged seven tries per game before their meeting was another that proved this team is the real deal under new head coach Scott Robertson. If they can replicate that then the title could go their way.

It would be an eighth Super Rugby trophy for the Crusaders, but to achieve that they must do something no team has done since 2000; win a final outside their own country. They have also lost their last two final appearances which Robertson and co. will be desperate to change.

The Lions meanwhile will have last year’s final defeat in their minds and will no doubt use that as an extra driving force as they look to repeat 2016’s eliminator performance against this very opponent. However, these Crusaders are much improved under Robertson this season.

The Lions were too good for the Crusaders in last year’s quarter-final, winning 42-25 thanks to tries from Courtnall Skosan, Rohan Janse van Rensburg, Malcolm Marx, Ruan Combrinck and Ross Cronjé. Elton Jantjies kicked 17 points in the victory. In reply the Crusaders’ try-scorers were Ryan Crotty, Mitchell Drummond and a late crossing from Ben Volavola with the game already gone.

The Lions are on a 14-match winning streak at the moment after they bounced back from an away loss to Jaguares way back on March 11. Meanwhile the Crusaders suffered their only defeat of the season to the Hurricanes on July 15 but have responded well in the knockouts.

Prediction: We’re in for a thriller of a final, possibly one of the best ever, in Johannesburg. And it’s a home win for us. Lions by three.

The Lions and Hurricanes face off in the Super Rugby semi-finals in Johannesburg on Saturday in a repeat of last year’s final.

On that occasion, the Hurricanes won 20-3 in wet Wellington weather to lift the trophy as the Lions walked away empty-handed. Earlier in 2016, the Hurricanes also won but that time by a more significant margin, 50-17.

Saturday will be the first time the Lions have faced New Zealand opposition in this year’s competition, something that one of their former greats Joel Stransky believes is a matter of grave concern as he feels they have been relatively untested this season.

However, this time around they are the home side and won’t be playing in wet New Zealand but in the early afternoon on the dry Highveld which will suit their preferred running game.

They are a more complete side this season and have the added motivation of wanting to give coach Johan Ackermann a fitting farewell by lifting their maiden Super Rugby trophy as Ackermann leaves at the end of the Super Rugby campaign to take over the reins at English side Gloucester.

Should they win, they will become just the second South African team in Super Rugby history to appear in back-to-back finals after the Bulls did so in 2009 and 2010.

Unfortunately for the South African side, they are missing their talisman and captain Warren Whiteley just as the New Zealand outfit are welcoming back their captain Dane Coles to the fold, who will make his 100th Super Rugby appearance.

The Hurricanes have won the last eight meetings between the sides and won four of their last five games in South Africa. However, this is the first Finals game they will play in South Africa.

The Lions have won their last 13 games on the bounce, the longest winning streak ever by a South African team, eclipsing the 12-game streak set by the Bulls across 2009 and 2010.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes have won 13 of their 16 games this season. They made a massive statement beating the Crusaders two weeks ago, the only side to do so in this year’s competition. And last weekend they beat the Brumbies 35-16 with little fuss.

Prediction: The Hurricanes will put on a masterclass in attacking rugby here, showing the Lions just how it’s done. Hurricanes by 20.

Players List:
Lions: 15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Ruan Combrinck, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Harold Vorster, 11 Courtnall Skosan, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Ross Cronje, 8 Ruan Ackermann, 7 Kwagga Smith, 6 Jaco Kriel (c), 5 Franco Mostert, 4 Andries Ferreira, 3 Ruan Dreyer, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Jacques van Rooyen.

Hurricanes: 15 Jordie Barrett, 14 Nehe Milner-Skudder, 13 Vince Aso, 12 Ngani Laumape, 11 Wes Goosen, 10 Beauden Barrett, 9 TJ Perenara, 8 Brad Shields, 7 Ardie Savea, 6 Vaea Fifita, 5 Sam Lousi, 4 Mark Abbott, 3 Jeff To’omaga-Allen, 2 Dane Coles (c), 1 Ben May.

With nine titles between them, this match-up will pit Super Rugby royalty against each other. The Crusaders are the most successful side in the competition’s history although the last of their seven titles was won way back in 2008.

Under the guidance of head coach Scott Robertson, who replaced Todd Blackadder at the start of the season, they have been in superb form all year and apart from a Round 17 defeat to the Hurricanes in Wellington, they have won all their matches this season.

The Chiefs won back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013 under head cosch Dave Rennie, who is determined to finish this year’s campaign on a high as he will be leaving the Hamilton-based franchise to coach Glasgow Warriors when the competition ends.

These sides head into this clash with plenty of confidence as they delivered impressive performances in their respctive quarter-final victories.

The Crusaders were superb in their 17-0 win over the Highlanders in atrocious weather conditions. The performance of the Crusaders forwards was particularly impressive and the manner in which they dispatched of their Highlanders counterparts has earned praise from Rennie who hailed them as the best pack in the competition.

With seasoned All Blacks like Kieran Read, Sam Whitelock and Joe Moody leading the way, the Christchurch faithful will be hoping for a repeat performance although in Brodie Retallick, Liam Messam and Sam Cane the Chiefs also have experienced campaigners and, like the aforementioned trio, they too have shone for the world champions at Test level.

The Chiefs, by contrast had to dig deep to claim a 17-11 victory over the Stormers in their semi-final in Cape Town and the after effects of their long trip back to New Zealand could have a bearing on this game’s outcome.

This will be the third Finals meeting between these teams after they met in the semi-finals of both 2012 and 2013, the Chiefs earning victories in both but by no more than three points on either occasion.

The Crusaders were victorious when these teams met in Round 13 this season, their first win against the Chiefs since 2014; and they’ll now be looking for back-to-back wins against them for the first time since Round 14 in 2011.

Players List:

Replacements: 16 Ben Funnell, 17 Wyatt Crockett, 18 Michael Alaalatoa, 19 Luke Romano, 20 Pete Samu, 21 Mitchell Drummond, 22 Mitchell Hunt, 23 George Bridge.

There should be plenty of fireworks when the Stormers and Chiefs do battle at Newlands on Saturday in the last Super Rugby quarter-final.

Both sides have played scintillating rugby at times this season and head into this clash in a rich vein of form after delivering impressive performances in recent weeks.

Home ground advantage and a 34-26 victory when these sides met in Round 7 will give the Stormers plenty of confidence as they head into this clash, but it must not be forgotten that the Chiefs earned a comprehensive 60-21 win when these teams met in last season’s quarter-finals at the same venue.

Another worrying factor for the Stormers is that they have only one Finals Series win to their name in Super Rugby history despite playing in eight such fixtures.

As proven in last year’s quarter-final, the Chiefs are still dangerous when they are not in action at home in Hamilton. This year, they have won five and drawn one of their seven fixtures away from home – their only road loss came when they travelled to Cape Town in Round 7.

The Stormers claimed a 34-26 victory in a thrilling encounter at Newlands in Round 7. Both sides deserve plenty of credit for making it an entertaining spectacle and the home side eventually outscored the Chiefs four tries to three with Sikhumbuzo Notshe, Siya Kolisi, Robert Du Preez and SP Marais all dotting down. Toni Pulu scored a brace of tries for the Chiefs and James Lowe also crossed the whitewash.

If the Stormers want to win this encounter much will depend on the performance of their young fly-half, Damian Willemse. Aged just 19, this is by far the biggest game of his fledgling career and there will be a huge responsibility on his shoulders as his side’s chief playmaker and goalkicker. Willemse has shown flashes of brilliance in recent weeks and must deliver a complete performance in what should be a pressure cooker enviroment.

The Stormers finished off their regular season campaign with an impressive 40-33 triumph over the Bulls in Pretoria. Prior to that, they registered victories against the Sunwolves at Newlands (52-15) and the Cheetahs in Bloemfontein (4-34). Their last defeat came just before the break for the June internationals when the Sharks beat them 22-10 in Durban.

The Chiefs’ most recent result was a 28-10 win over the Brumbies in Hamilton last weekend and before that, they claimed a hard-fough 17-14 victory against the Hurricanes in Welllington on June 9. Prior to that, they also beat the Waratahs in Hamilton (46-31) and drew with the Blues (16-16) in Round 14.

Prediction: This is going to be a humdinger and don’t be surprised if it goes down to the wire. The Stormers have come on in leaps and bounds since last year’s disastrous performance and will just edge it. Stormers by four points!

Players List:
Stormers: 15 SP Marais, 14 Cheslin Kolbe, 13 EW Viljoen, 12 Damian de Allende, 11 Dillyn Leyds, 10 Damian Willemse, 9 Jano Vermaak, 8 Nizaam Carr, 7 Rynhardt Elstadt, 6 Siya Kolisi (c), 5 Pieter-Steph du Toit, 4 Eben Etzebeth, 3 Frans Malherbe, 2 Bongi Mbonambi, 1 JC Janse van Rensburg.

Replacements: 16 Ramone Samuels, 17 Oli Kebble, 18 Wilco Louw, 19 Chris van Zyl, 20 Sikhumbuzo Notshe, 21 Justin Phillips, 22 Seabelo Senatla, 23 Juan de Jongh.

Chiefs: 15 Damian McKenzie, 14 Solomon Alaimalo, 13 Anton Lienert-Brown, 12 Stephen Donald, 11 James Lowe, 10 Aaron Cruden (cc), 9 Tawera Kerr-Barlow, 8 Michael Leitch, 7 Sam Cane (cc), 6 Liam Messam, 5 Mitchell Brown, 4 Brodie Retallick, 3 Nepo Laulala, 2 Nathan Harris, 1 Kane Hames.

Replacements: 16 Liam Polwart, 17 Aidan Ross, 18 Atu Moli, 19 Dominic Bird, 20 Lachlan Boshier, 21 Finlay Christie, 22 Tim Nanai-Williams, 23 Shaun Stevenson.

The Lions and Sharks meet for the second time in as many weeks in what should be a thrilling Super Rugby quarter-final at Ellis Park on Saturday.

The Lions had more to play for last weekend with top spot up for grabs whereas the Sharks could not improve on their eighth position.

This weekend the Sharks will have it all to play for but without the added pressure of being favourites, a tag that falls on the shoulders of the Lions.

And Sharks winger Kobus Van Wyk, who scored the Sharks’ only try of the game last weekend, is relishing being labelled as the underdog.

“You never know what can happen with the underdog,” Van Wyk said.

Although they are the biblical David in this clash with Goliath, there is a measure of self-belief in the team.

“After the defeat, we obviously didn’t feel great, but we returned to training on Monday and the boys are ready, our heads are in the right place,”added Van Wyk.

“After losing to them twice, hopefully it will be a case of third time lucky.

“They’re a very good outfit, but if we can put pressure on their playmakers and if our forwards pitch up and win the contests, we are going to be in business.”

Beating the Lions won’t be easy, but there is a plan and it’s about maintaining ball possession when they have it, and then closing out the opportunities.

“Keeping the ball – that’s what we need to do to win,” he points out. “Our strike rate from scrums and lineouts wasn’t that great on Saturday, so we need to make sure for the first few phases that we need to hang on to the ball.

“It would be awesome to beat them up there, the boys are really keen. We’re ready to fire.”

Meanwhile, the Lions will feel that this is their best opportunity to go one better than last season and win the competition for the first time in their history, having lost to the Hurricanes in the 2016 final.

Coach Johan Ackermann has done a great job over the years of getting the side to this point where they are genuine challengers and the team would love to give him a fitting send-off as he departs at the end of the season take over the reins at Gloucester.

The Lions lost just one of their 15 games, with that defeat coming against the Jaguares. But significantly they have yet to face New Zealand opposition.

The Sharks have struggled for consistency at times, managing nine wins in their 15 games. Since a four-match winning streak from Rounds 2-6, they have been unable to put together a sustained run of wins.

Prediction: The Lions will have too much firepower, especially at home. Lions by 15.

Players List:
Lions: 15 Andries Coetzee, 14 Ruan Combrinck, 13 Lionel Mapoe, 12 Harold Vorster, 11 Courtnall Skosan, 10 Elton Jantjies, 9 Ross Cronje, 8 Ruan Ackermann, 7 Kwagga Smith, 6 Jaco Kriel (c), 5 Franco Mostert, 4 Andries Ferreira, 3 Ruan Dreyer, 2 Malcolm Marx, 1 Jacques van Rooyen.

Sharks: 15 Lwazi Mvovo, 14 Kobus van Wyk, 13 Lukhanyo Am, 12 Andre Esterhuizen, 11 S’busiso Nkosi, 10 Curwin Bosch, 9 Cobus Reinach, 8 Daniel du Preez, 7 Jean-Luc du Preez, 6 Philip van der Walt (c), 5 Stephan Lewies, 4 Etienne Oosthuizen, 3 Coenie Oosthuizen, 2 Chiliboy Ralepelle, 1 Thomas du Toit.

Replacements: 16 Franco Marais/Stephan Coetzee, 17 Juan Schoeman, 18 Lourens Adriaanse, 19 Jean Droste, 20 Tera Mtembu, 21 Michael Claassens, 22 Garth April, 23 Jeremy Ward.
