The Reds beat the Rebels 29-24 in Melbourne in Round 12 and they sat out last weekend. They return to action in third place in the Australian Conference, three points behind the Waratahs and seven shy of the Brumbies and all of those contenders have four matches remaining in the regular season. The Reds have this game and another home fixture against the Brumbies to come but they also have to go to New Zealand to face the Blues and the Highlanders. The Reds have beaten the Kings and the Sharks in Brisbane this season but they have lost three matches in front of their own supporters including a local derby against the Waratahs, 29-26 in Round 10.
The Force were brushed aside by the Highlanders in Perth last weekend, shipping eight unanswered tries in a 55-6 hiding. That was a big let down after a fine win away to Jaguares in Round 12 and they come into this game three points behind the Reds in the Australian Conference. The Force were underdogs for the first meeting with the Reds this season, a game they won 26-19 in Perth back in Round 2. Two other local derby matches saw them lose 19-13 at the Tahs in Round 1 and 25-17 at the Brumbies in Round 3.
The Force beat the Reds 26-19 earlier this season in Round Two. Tries from Chance Peni, Matt Philip and Curtis Rona as well as three penalties from Ian Prior and a Jono Lance conversion proved too much for the away side. Eto Nabuli was unlucky to be on the losing side despite scoring a hat-trick.
The Reds opened their 2017 Super Rugby campaign with a win over the Sharks. Six straight defeats followed against the Force, Crusaders, Lions, Jaguares, Hurricanes and Brumbies. They then bounced back with a win over the Kings before losing to the Waratahs and Chiefs. They come into this game fresh off a bye having beaten the Rebels two weeks back.
The Force, like the Reds, have won three of their 11 games thus far this season. Those wins came against the Reds, Kings and Jaguares while they have lost to the Waratahs, Brumbies, Crusaders, Blues, Chiefs, Lions, Sharks and Highlanders.
The Reds will have too much firepower especially with having come off a bye. Reds by 15.
