Ten games into the defence of their title the Canes have a record of eight wins and two defeats. They are safely in the play off berths but the gap to the overall leaders the Crusaders currently stands at 12 points and the Chiefs are four points better off. The Canes were beaten 20-12 away to the Crusaders last week, a second local derby loss after they went down to the Chiefs 28-18 in Hamilton in Round 3. Five home games have delivered four bonus point wins which includes a 41-22 victory over the Stormers in Round 11.
The Cheetahs tour started in Auckland last week when they lost 50-32 to the Blues. They just about stayed in the handicap that had been set around 20.5 points in a game of 12 tries, four of which were scored by the Free Staters. Prior to coming on tour the Cheetahs lost at home to three other New Zealand sides, the Chiefs (41-27) in Round 8, the Crusaders (48-21) in Round 10 and the Highlanders (45-41) in Round 11. They coughed up match winning leads in the games against the Chiefs and the Highlanders in Bloem but their away form this season has generally been poor and the Cheetahs arrive on the back of eight straight losses.
The Hurricanes claimed a 60-27 victory over the Cheetahs in Wellington in 2014. The home side were in a rampant mood and outscored their visitors by nine tries to three. Beauden Barrett led the way with two tries for the Hurricanes and their other five-pointers were scored by Dane Coles, Chris Smylie, Tom Marshall, Jeremy Thrush, Matt Proctor, Conrad Smith and Alapati Leiua. For the Cheetahs, Willie le Roux, Philip van der Walt and Francois Uys crossed the whitewash.
Last weekend’s loss to the Crusaders was only the Hurricanes’ second defeat of the season. Their only other loss was against the Chiefs in Round 3 with their eight victories registered against the Sunwolves, Rebels, Highlanders, Reds, Waratahs, Blues, Brumbies and Stormers.
By contrast, the Cheetahs are on a terrible eight-match losing streak. The men from Bloemfontein’s two victories came against the Bulls and Sunwolves in rounds 2 and 3 after they lost their opener to the Lions. Their other defeats were against the Jaguares, Sharks, Stormers, Chiefs, Bulls, Crusaders, Highlanders and Blues.
The Hurricanes will have little trouble in taking the spoils in this encounter and don’t be surprised if it’s by a big winning margin. Hurricanes to win by 25 points.
