The Lions and Hurricanes face off in the Super Rugby semi-finals in Johannesburg on Saturday in a repeat of last year’s final.

On that occasion, the Hurricanes won 20-3 in wet Wellington weather to lift the trophy as the Lions walked away empty-handed. Earlier in 2016, the Hurricanes also won but that time by a more significant margin, 50-17.

Saturday will be the first time the Lions have faced New Zealand opposition in this year’s competition, something that one of their former greats Joel Stransky believes is a matter of grave concern as he feels they have been relatively untested this season.

However, this time around they are the home side and won’t be playing in wet New Zealand but in the early afternoon on the dry Highveld which will suit their preferred running game.

They are a more complete side this season and have the added motivation of wanting to give coach Johan Ackermann a fitting farewell by lifting their maiden Super Rugby trophy as Ackermann leaves at the end of the Super Rugby campaign to take over the reins at English side Gloucester.

Should they win, they will become just the second South African team in Super Rugby history to appear in back-to-back finals after the Bulls did so in 2009 and 2010.

Unfortunately for the South African side, they are missing their talisman and captain Warren Whiteley just as the New Zealand outfit are welcoming back their captain Dane Coles to the fold, who will make his 100th Super Rugby appearance.

The Hurricanes have won the last eight meetings between the sides and won four of their last five games in South Africa. However, this is the first Finals game they will play in South Africa.

The Lions have won their last 13 games on the bounce, the longest winning streak ever by a South African team, eclipsing the 12-game streak set by the Bulls across 2009 and 2010.

Meanwhile, the Hurricanes have won 13 of their 16 games this season. They made a massive statement beating the Crusaders two weeks ago, the only side to do so in this year’s competition. And last weekend they beat the Brumbies 35-16 with little fuss.

Prediction: The Hurricanes will put on a masterclass in attacking rugby here, showing the Lions just how it’s done. Hurricanes by 20.

The Force chalked up a fourth win of the campaign away to the Reds last weekend, a second victory over the Queenslanders this season. The two other highlights came at home to the Kings and away to Jaguares and they finished Round 14 third best of the Australian sides, 11 points behind the Brumbies but just two behind the Waratahs. The Force have lost all four of their matches against New Zealand sides this season and they will want to forget the 55-6 hiding dished out by the Highlanders on this ground in Round 13. They did make the Chiefs work hard for a 17-6 win in Perth in Round 9 and earlier in the campaign they lost away to the Blues (24-15) and the Crusaders (45-17).

The Canes will have an eye on the earlier game between the Crusaders and Highlanders the outcome of which will tell us more about their chances of reeling in the Saders at the top of the NZ Conference. Coming into this round the gap was 11 points but the Canes had played one game fewer and if the Saders come unstuck earlier in the day, the door would be open to some degree especially as the Canes still have to host the Crusaders in Wellington. Two defeats this season came in local derby matches and the Canes have been foot perfect against overseas opposition.

The Hurricanes demolished the Force 41-6 and by six tries to zero when the Australian side visited Wellington last year. The Canes’ tries came from Dane Coles, James Marshall, TJ Perenara, Blade Thomson, Ngani Laumape and Ardie Savea. Five of them only came after the 50-minute mark as the Force tired.

Force full-back Marcel Brache has scored in each of his last two games for the Force and is definitely one to watch as he seems to be getting back to his best form. Solid under the high ball, with a good touch-finder and pace to burn, Brache is turning into a dangerous number 15.

Keep an eye on fit-again Beauden Barrett. He is undoubtedly the best fly-half in World Rugby at the moment. He possesses electric pace but also has the intelligence of when to use it to full effect. He is partly the reason why the Canes’ are such an effective counter-attacking side.

The Force have won four of their 12 matches this season against the Reds (twice), Kings and the Jaguares. Their losses have come against the Waratahs, Brumbies, Crusaders, Blues, Chiefs, Lions, Sharks and Highlanders.

The Hurricanes have won 10 of their 12 matches this season. They have beaten the Sunwolves, Rebels, Highlanders, Reds, Waratahs, Blues, Brumbies, Stormers, Cheetahs and Bulls while they have lost to the Chiefs and Crusaders.

The Hurricanes should make it nine out of nine against the Force. Hurricanes by 20.

Players List:
Force: 15 Dane Haylett-Petty, 14 James Verity-Amm, 13 Curtis Rona, 12 Bill Meakes, 11 Alex Newsome, 10 Peter Grant, 9 Michael Ruru, 8 Isi Naisarani, 7 Matt Hodgson (c), 6 Ross Haylett-Petty, 5 Adam Coleman, 4 Matt Philip, 3 Jermaine Ainsley, 2 Heath Tessmann, 1 Francois van Wyk.

Replacements: 16 Tatafu Polota-Nau, 17 Pek Cowan, 18 Tetera Faulkner, 19 Richie Arnold, 20 Richard Hardwick, 21 Mitchell Short, 22 Luke Burton, 23 Marcel Brache.

Hurricanes: 15 Jordie Barrett, 14 Cory Jane, 13 Vince Aso, 12 Ngani Laumape, 11 Ben Lam, 10 Beauden Barrett, 9 TJ Perenara (c), 8 Brad Shields, 7 Callum Gibbins, 6 Reed Prinsep, 5 Vaea Fifita, 4 Sam Lousi, 3 Ben May, 2 Ricky Riccitelli, 1 Loni Uhila.

Replacements: 16 Leni Apisai, 17 Chris Eves, 18 Jeff Toomaga-Allen, 19 Mark Abbott, 20 Ardie Savea, 21 Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, 22 Otere Black, 23 Nehe Milner-Skudder.

The Crusaders are marginal favourites at 8/10 at home to the Hurricanes. They return home to New Zealand after a very successful tour of South Africa with big wins over both the Cheetahs and the Bulls. They have won 10 out of 10 matches in this years Super Rugby competition and both home wins against New Zealand sides have been by 1-12 point margins.

The Hurricanes are themselves on an impressive run and have won 6 games in a row, drawing clear late last week to beat the Stormers by 19 points. This will be their 3rd game against a New Zealand side on the road and they beat the Blues by 4 points and lost to the Chiefs by 8.

The Hurricanes have won 3 of their last 5 matches against the Crusaders in Christchurch.

This should be an excellent match but I feel that the fact that the Crusaders have had to travel back from South Africa will count against them and that little bit of an edge should be enough to see the defending champions home.

The Crusaders have to cope with the travel factor as they return from a two match tour of South Africa where their 100% record this season was never threatened as they completed comfortable wins at the Cheetahs and the Bulls. The Saders have a record of 10 wins from 10 with bonus points chalked up in each of the last six and they have a four point lead over the Chiefs at the top of the NZ Conference. Their record in local derby matches is perhaps most relevant here and the two they have played so far both came early in the tournament. The Crusaders had to dig deep on both occasions to come from behind to see off the Highlanders (30-27) in Dunedin in Round 2 and the Blues were beaten (33-24) at this stadium in Round 4.

Players List:
Crusaders: 15 David Havili, 14 Seta Tamanivalu, 13 Jack Goodhue, 12 Ryan Crotty, 11 George Bridge, 10 Richie Mo’unga, 9 Mitchell Drummond, 8 Jordan Taufua, 7 Matt Todd (c), 6 Pete Samu, 5 Scott Barrett, 4 Luke Romano, 3 Owen Franks, 2 Codie Taylor, 1 Joe Moody.

Replacements: 16 Ben Funnell, 17 Wyatt Crockett, 18 Michael Alaalatoa, 19 Quinten Strange, 20 Heiden Bedwell-Curtis, 21 Bryn Hall, 22 Mitchell Hunt, 23 Manasa Mataele.

Hurricanes: 15 Jordie Barrett, 14 Cory Jane, 13 Vince Aso, 12 Ngani Laumape, 11 Julian Savea, 10 Beauden Barrett, 9 TJ Perenara (c), 8 Brad Shields, 7 Ardie Savea, 6 Reed Prinsep, 5 Vaea Fifita, 4 Mark Abbott, 3 Jeffery To’omaga-Allen, 2 Ricky Riccitelli, 1 Chris Eves.

Replacements: 16 Leni Apisai, 17 Ben May, 18 Loni Uhila, 19 Sam Lousi, 20 Toa Halafihi, 21 Te Toiroa Tahuriorangi, 22 Otere Black, 23 Wes Goosen.

Free Super Rugby Hurricanes vs Stormers Live Streaming 2017 Online Rugby Union, at Westpac Stadium, Wellington, New Zealand, Friday, 05 May 2017, Time 17:35 (AEDT). The Canes come off a bye and they return to action third best in the New Zealand Conference, eight points shy of the Crusaders and four behind the Chiefs, both of whom have played one game more. They have won all four of their home games this season, three of which were accompanied by a bonus point and the only handicap they failed to cover in that sequence came in Round 7 when they beat the Waratahs 38-28. Since losing to the Stormers in Cape Town in 2013 the Hurricanes have won 10 of 11 meetings with South African opposition.

This is the third and final tour match for the Stormers who have had a miserable time of it in New Zealand over the last couple of weeks or so. In Round 10 away to the Highlanders the Stormers were given a 13.5 point start on the handicap but they crashed and burned 57-14 (HT 31-7), shipping nine tries. It was a pretty similar story in Round 9 when the Stormers began their tour against the Crusaders in Christchurch with a 57-24 defeat, the cap was again set at 13.5 points and the Stormers were out of it by half time. After losing at home to the Lions before heading overseas the Stormers now have a record of six wins and three defeats this season but they still top Africa Conference 1 with plenty of daylight, 12 points clear of the Bulls. Having lost the services of JC Janse van Rensburg, Eben Etzebeth, Pieter-Steph du Toit and Kurt Coleman the Stormers the injury situation is pretty alarming too but Juan de Jongh and Rynhardt Elstadt are potentially in line to return.

The visitors conceded 143 points in those three games and with the ‘Canes putting 56 on the Brumbies before their bye, the signs are not looking good for the Stormers against an outfit in excellent form, inspired by the likes of TJ Perenara, Beauden Barrett and Ardie Savea.

What may ease the pain of recent weeks for Stormers supporters is the fact that those defeats came against teams not in their Conference, meaning they currently still sit in third place on the overall standings, despite being seventh if the table was judged on points alone.

They could also be warmed by the fact they have done well against the Hurricanes in the past, with their last meeting in 2015 seeing the men from Wellington prevail to end what was a four-game winning hoodoo from the Stormers. They’ve won six of their last eight games against the ‘Canes.

The Hurricanes ran out 25-20 winners in Wellington in 2015 thanks to tries from Nehe Milner-Skudder, Julian Savea and Beauden Barrett. Barrett also kicked 10 points while for the Stormers a penalty try and one from Huw Jones were their offerings.

Before their bye week the Hurricanes were enjoying a five-game winning streak, their last outing seeing them point 56 points on the Brumbies. They’ve lost just once in their eight games so far this season, with their only defeat coming away to the Chiefs in Round Three.

The Stormers, in contrast, are in terrible form coming into this game. After six wins on the spin to start 2017, they have suffered three successive losses, going down to the Lions, Crusaders and Highlanders in consecutive weeks. They leaked 57 points in each of the latter two games.

We can only see one winner at Westpac Stadium as the champions should dominate their struggling opponents. Hurricanes by 30.

Players List:
Hurricanes: 15 Jordie Barrett, 14 Cory Jane, 13 Vince Aso, 12 Ngani Laumape, 11 Julian Savea, 10 Beauden Barrett, 9 TJ Perenara (c), 8 Ardie Savea, 7 Callum Gibbins, 6 Brad Shields, 5 Vaea Fifita, 4 Mark Abbott, 3 Jeffery To’omaga-Allen, 2 Ricky Riccitelli, 1 Ben May.
