With nine titles between them, this match-up will pit Super Rugby royalty against each other. The Crusaders are the most successful side in the competition’s history although the last of their seven titles was won way back in 2008.

Under the guidance of head coach Scott Robertson, who replaced Todd Blackadder at the start of the season, they have been in superb form all year and apart from a Round 17 defeat to the Hurricanes in Wellington, they have won all their matches this season.

The Chiefs won back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013 under head cosch Dave Rennie, who is determined to finish this year’s campaign on a high as he will be leaving the Hamilton-based franchise to coach Glasgow Warriors when the competition ends.

These sides head into this clash with plenty of confidence as they delivered impressive performances in their respctive quarter-final victories.

The Crusaders were superb in their 17-0 win over the Highlanders in atrocious weather conditions. The performance of the Crusaders forwards was particularly impressive and the manner in which they dispatched of their Highlanders counterparts has earned praise from Rennie who hailed them as the best pack in the competition.

With seasoned All Blacks like Kieran Read, Sam Whitelock and Joe Moody leading the way, the Christchurch faithful will be hoping for a repeat performance although in Brodie Retallick, Liam Messam and Sam Cane the Chiefs also have experienced campaigners and, like the aforementioned trio, they too have shone for the world champions at Test level.

The Chiefs, by contrast had to dig deep to claim a 17-11 victory over the Stormers in their semi-final in Cape Town and the after effects of their long trip back to New Zealand could have a bearing on this game’s outcome.

This will be the third Finals meeting between these teams after they met in the semi-finals of both 2012 and 2013, the Chiefs earning victories in both but by no more than three points on either occasion.

The Crusaders were victorious when these teams met in Round 13 this season, their first win against the Chiefs since 2014; and they’ll now be looking for back-to-back wins against them for the first time since Round 14 in 2011.

The Crusaders enter under the unfamiliar cloud of defeat after they suffered a first loss of the Super Rugby season at the hands of the Hurricanes last week. Many will say it was better then than now and they will hope to bounce back with purpose at home this Saturday.

The Highlanders’ only loss since March 18 came against the Crusaders and that was because of that last ditch Mitch Hunt drop-goal. They’ve been in excellent form of late and enter on the back of a 40-17 hammering of the Reds in Dunedin. They also beat the British & Irish Lions.

The second Super Rugby Qualifier comes from Christchurch where the Crusaders and Highlanders battle it out in what should be an epic game.

An added time drop-goal from Mitch Hunt separated the sides in June and before that it was again three points the difference with the men from AMI Stadium coming out on top on both occasions. Prior to that though it was the Highlanders that had boasted back-to-back successes.

Yet again this should be a close encounter between these 2017 contenders as the Crusaders hunt that elusive eighth title while the Dunedin side look to repeat their 2015 triumph and get their hands on the coveted prize. Both are looking like genuine challengers for the trophy.

The Crusaders of course have lost just one match this Super Rugby campaign but the Highlanders have been progressing very nicely under the radar and have lost only one of their last 11 games. Their form has echoes of that title winning year when few expected them to go all the way but they turned it on when it mattered and once again it is their under-rated pack that continues to impress, skills wise especially.

Both will look to play with tempo which is great for the spectators but it’s unfortunate the weather forecast shows rain is expected, both on Friday and Saturday, which hopefully won’t detract from the spectacle. If it does limit expansive games and force the sides into a more forward oriented clash, one has to feel the Crusaders will be the happier side of the two, with their refreshed All Blacks back in action.

Kieran Read is also fit for this fixture which might also give the Crusaders an edge but in knockout rugby, anything can happen and we all know these Highlanders will back themselves and relish the underdog tag. It promises to be a bruising and breathless contest this weekend.

The last time these teams met: What a finish it was in Christchurch in June as Mitch Hunt’s late, dramatic drop-goal saw the Crusaders win 25-22. Mitchell Drummond, Seta Tamanivalu and Heiden Bedwell-Curtis crossed for the Crusaders while for the Highlanders their try-scorers were Richard Buckman and Waisake Naholo (2). It looked to be heading for a 22-22 draw but up stepped Hunt from long range with that drop.

Players to watch: The return of Ryan Crotty is huge for the Crusaders. His combination with young Jack Goodhue was deadly in their recent meeting with the Highlanders and they’ll hope to get the better of Rob Thompson and Malakai Fekitoa once again this week. Crotty’s smart lines and the ever-improving Goodhue’s intelligence with ball in hand could prove vital in Christchurch. Also watch out for Scott Barrett.

How can we not pick Waisake Naholo? He has scored a brace against the Crusaders in four successive clashes and will surely be a marked man on Saturday. It’s interesting the Crusaders have decided to move Seta Tamanivalu over to the other wing so he faces Naholo, with the much lighter George Bridge benched. The Crusaders will hope that helps limit the damage Naholo can cause but any sniff and he will punish them.

Players List:
Crusaders: 15 David Havili, 14 Israel Dagg, 13 Jack Goodhue, 12 Ryan Crotty, 11 Seta Tamanivalu, 10 Richie Mo’unga, 9 Bryn Hall, 8 Kieran Read, 7 Matt Todd, 6 Jordan Taufua, 5 Sam Whitelock (c), 4 Scott Barrett, 3 Owen Franks, 2 Codie Taylor, 1 Joe Moody.

Replacements: 16 Ben Funnell, 17 Wyatt Crockett, 18 Mike Alaalatoa, 19 Luke Romano, 20 Pete Samu, 21 Mitchell Drummond, 22 Mitchell Hunt, 23 George Bridge.

Highlanders: 15 Ben Smith (c), 14 Waisake Naholo, 13 Malakai Fekitoa, 12 Rob Thompson, 11 Richard Buckman, 10 Lima Sopoaga, 9 Aaron Smith, 8 Luke Whitelock, 7 James Lentjes, 6 Liam Squire, 5 Tom Franklin, 4 Jackson Hemopo, 3 Siate Tokolahi, 2 Liam Coltman, 1 Daniel Lienert-Brown.

It’s now 13 wins from 13 outings this season for the Saders who have this game followed by a visit to the Hurricanes in Wellington after the internationals to come. Despite the foot perfect record they haven’t shaken off the Lions when it comes to securing top spot overall so there can be no let up despite holding an 11 point advantage in the New Zealand Conference. The Saders won their four earlier New Zealand derby matches this season by margins of three to nine points. The narrowest of those wins came in the first meeting with the Highlanders when the Crusaders launched a late fightback to pinch the win. Two of the derby matches were staged in Christchurch and they saw the Blues (33-24) and the Hurricanes (20-12) leave empty handed.

The Highlanders have put together a nine match winning streak and all bar one of those victories came against sides outside of New Zealand. They beat the Waratahs 44-28 in Dunedin last weekend, a result which saw them move into third spot in the New Zealand Conference although they have played one game more than both the Chiefs (4th) and the Hurricanes (2nd). In New Zealand derby matches this season the Highlanders beat the Blues at home and away but in addition to losing the first clash with the Saders they also went down (24-15) to the Chiefs in a home game and they were thumped by the Canes (41-15) in Wellington.

These sides met in Round 2 and a stunning fightback helped the Crusaders to secure a 30-27 win down in Dunedin. This after the Highlanders led 27-6 early in the second half. Seta Tamanivalu snatched the win with a try in the game’s closing stages. The Crusaders were also awarded a penalty try and their other five-pointers were scored by David Havili and Whetu Douglas. Waisake Naholo scored two tries for the Highlanders and Gareth Evans also dotted down.

The Crusaders are the only unbeaten team left in the competition and have won all 13 their previous matches. In their most recent matches, in the month of May, the beat the Bulls, Hurricanes, Chiefs and Rebels.

The Highlanders are currently on a nine-match winning streak and claimed narrow wins over the Cheetahs and Bulls on their South African tour at the start of May before beating the Western Force in Perth and the Waratahs at home last weekend.

Like their previous encounter, this one should be a humdinger and don’t be surprised if it also goes down to the wire. We’re backing the Crusaders to take it by three points again!

Players List:
Crusaders: 15 David Havili, 14 Seta Tamanivalu, 13 Jack Goodhue, 12 Ryan Crotty, 11 George Bridge, 10 Richie Mo’unga, 9 Mitchell Drummond, 8 Jordan Taufua, 7 Matt Todd, 6 Heiden Bedwell-Curtis, 5 Sam Whitelock (c), 4 Luke Romano, 3 Owen Franks, 2 Codie Taylor, 1 Joe Moody.

Replacements: 16 Ben Funnell, 17 Wyatt Crockett, 18 Michael Alaalatoa, 19 Quinten Strange, 20 Jed Brown, 21 Bryn Hall, 22 Mitchell Hunt, 23 Israel Dagg.

Highlanders: 15 Ben Smith (cc), 14 Waisake Naholo, 13 Malakai Fekitoa, 12 Rob Thompson, 11 Richard Buckman, 10 Marty Banks, 9 Aaron Smith, 8 Luke Whitelock, 7 James Lentjes, 6 Gareth Evans, 5 Tom Franklin, 4 Alex Ainley, 3 Siate Tokolahi, 2 Liam Coltman, 1 Daniel Lienert-Brown.

The Waratahs return from a bye and desperate to put a run together which could yet see them catch the Brumbies in the Australian Conference. Coming into this round the Tahs were five points off the pace but they do have other company with no Australian franchise capable of cutting loose thus far. In Australian derby matches this season the Tahs have won three from four including a come from behind 32-25 win over the Rebels in Melbourne in Round 5. Those three wins came by margins of no more than seven points but they were beaten by the Brumbies (28-12) in Sydney in Round 4.

The Rebels remain stuck on one win (alongside one draw and eight defeats) and that sole victory came back in Round 8 when they saw off the Brumbies 19-17 in Melbourne. They have already lost derby matches to the Tahs and the Reds in Melbourne and their overall away form this season has consisted of hidings at the Hurricanes, Highlanders and the Kings alongside a surprise 9-9 draw at the Sharks. The Rebels have scored just two tries in those four away fixtures, both of which came in the 51-12 loss at the Highlanders in Round 6.

One of the crazier games of the 2017 season thus far saw the Waratahs complete a dramatic comeback to win 32-25 in Melbourne, despite the Rebels have led 25-6 at the break. Two tries from Reece Hodge, who finished with 20 points, and another from Tom English helped the Rebels build up that commanding lead. But scores from Ned Hanigan, Reece Robinson, Michael Wells and finally David Horwitz sparked wild scenes on the Waratahs bench at the final whistle.

The Waratahs have won 10 of their previous 12 clashes between these teams, with their two losses coming by margins of no greater than four points. The Waratahs have lost their last four games on home turf, never before in their Super Rugby history have they lost more home fixtures in succession. The Rebels have won three of their last four games played on a Sunday, including a brace of wins last season against the Waratahs and Force. The Waratahs have scored six tries this season after opting to take a penalty tap, more than any other team in the competition while the Rebels are yet to score from via the same method.

A fresher Waratahs outfit looks to have the edge, although they will hope to start the game slightly better than last time to avoid another dramatic second-half fightback… Waratahs by eight.

Players List:
Waratahs: 15 Israel Folau, 14 Taqele Naiyaravoro, 13 Rob Horne, 12 David Horwitz, 11 Cam Clark, 10 Bernard Foley, 9 Nick Phipps, 8 Michael Wells, 7 Michael Hooper (c), 6 Ned Hanigan, 5 Will Skelton, 4 Dean Mumm, 3 Sekope Kepu, 2 Tolu Latu, 1 Tom Robertson.

Replacements: 16 Damien Fitzpatrick, 17 Paddy Ryan, 18 Angus Taavao, 19 David McDuling, 20 Jed Holloway, 21 Jake Gordon, 22 Bryce Hegarty, 23 Irae Simone.

Rebels: 15 Ben Volavola, 14 Jack Maddocks, 13 Mitch Inman, 12 Reece Hodge (c), 11 Marika Koroibete, 10 Jackson Garden-Bachop, 9 Ben Meehan, 8 Amanaki Mafi, 7 Sean McMahon, 6 Lopeti Timani, 5 Steve Cummins, 4 Culum Retallick, 3 Tyrel Lomax, 2 James Hanson, 1 Toby Smith.

The Chiefs return to action after sitting out Round 12. They have a record of nine wins and one defeat with that sole loss coming away to the Stormers (34-26) in Cape Town in Round 7. In many respects they have conceded home advantage with the game being staged in Suva although in Round 15 last season their clash with the Saders was staged here and the Chiefs won it 23-13. This will be the fourth New Zealand derby of the season for the Chiefs who beat the Highlanders 24-15 in Dunedin in Round 1, the Blues 41-26 in Hamilton in Round 2 and the Hurricanes 26-18 in Hamilton in Round 3.

The Crusaders winning streak this season now stands at 11 games and they are four points better off than the Lions in the overall standings whilst in New Zealand they are eight clear of the Chiefs and 12 better off than the Canes although they have played one game more than those two sides. They came through a very significant test at home to the Hurricanes last week with a 20-12 win in Christchurch. In two earlier New Zealand derby matches the Crusaders had to dig deep on to come from behind to see off the Highlanders (30-27) in Dunedin in Round 2 and the Blues were beaten (33-24) in Christchurch in Round 4.

The most recent clash between these teams was in Suva last year in a game played in poor weather conditions. The Chiefs won 23-13 thanks to first-half tries from James Lowe and Brad Weber. Jone Macilai hit back just before the break to reduce the margin to 17-10, but the men from Hamilton held on and a late penalty from Damian McKenzie even denied the Crusaders a losing bonus point.

The Chiefs went into a bye week on the back of a four-match winning run having beaten the Cheetahs, Sunwolves, Force and Reds. They have won nine out of their ten matches so far this season and also have the best defence in the competition, having leaked just 190 points.

The Crusaders, who have played one game more than the Chiefs, are flying with 11 victories out of 11, their most recent coming against the Hurricanes. They average six tries per game but last week showed their defence is also solid as they shut down the ‘Canes in a fine effort.

The Crusaders appear a different proposition under Robertson and should end their drought against the Chiefs. Crusaders by 5.

Players List:
Chiefs: 15 Damian McKenzie, 14 Tim Nanai-Williams, 13 Sam McNicol, 12 Anton Lienert-Brown, 11 James Lowe, 10 Aaron Cruden (cc), 9 Tawera Kerr-Barlow, 8 Michael Leitch, 7 Sam Cane (cc), 6 Mitchell Brown, 5 Brodie Retallick, 4 Dominic Bird, 3 Nepo Laulala, 2 Nathan Harris, 1 Kane Hames.

Replacements: 16 Hika Elliot, 17 Siegfried Fisi’ihoi, 18 Atu Moli, 19 Taleni Seu, 20 Liam Messam, 21 Jonathan Taumateine, 22 Stephen Donald, 23 Shaun Stevenson.

Crusaders: 15 David Havili, 14 Seta Tamanivalu, 13 Jack Goodhue, 12 Ryan Crotty, 11 George Bridge, 10 Richie Mo’unga, 9 Bryn Hall, 8 Jordan Taufua, 7 Matt Todd, 6 Pete Samu, 5 Sam Whitelock (c), 4 Luke Romano, 3 Owen Franks, 2 Codie Taylor, 1 Joe Moody.

Replacements: 16 Ben Funnell, 17 Wyatt Crockett, 18 Michael Alaalatoa, 19 Quinten Strange, 20 Heiden Bedwell-Curtis, 21 Mitchell Drummond, 22 Mitchell Hunt, 23 Manasa Mataele.
