Out of the last five Super Rugby matches between the Johannesburg based Lions and the Durban based Sharks the Lions have won just one.

Going further back out of the last 17 Super Rugby matches between the teams the Lions have won just one match against the Sharks.

Overall the Lions have played the Sharks 21 times since 1998 and the Lions have won 3, drawn 2 and lost 16 times.

That gives the Lions a record of winning just 14% of their matches regardless of venue against the Sharks with an average score of Lions 18 Sharks 30.

This weekend the match will be in Johannesburg which is home for the Lions and where the teams have met 10 times.

In those 10 matches the Lions have won 2, drawn 2 and lost 6 times with an average score of : Lions 21 Sharks 28.

In terms of form the Lions are on an extraordinary run of winning their last three matches which has given them a record of played eight and won four.

They have played three matches at home this year and won one – last week against the Bulls.

Coach Johan Ackermann has chosen to start Julian Redelinghuys at tight head while Jaco Kriel also returns to the starting line-up at flank on the side of the scrum.

Ackermann has also made two changes to his starting back line as Faf de Klerk starts at scrum half having helped to create the Lions match winning try off the bench last week.

Mark Richards has been named to make his Super Rugby debut at left wing while Lohan Jacobs could also make his Super Rugby debut should he come off the bench.

The team with big changes this week is the Sharks as they have a new captain, flyhalf and almost half the team is different after last week’s heavy loss to the Crusaders.

Fred Zeilinga starts for Pat Lambie who has been replaced as captain by Marco Wentzel. Odwa Ndungane has replaced SP Marais at fullback with S’bura Sithole on the wing.

Upfront, there is an overhaul with Lourens Adriaanse, Franco Marais and Dale Chadwick packing down in the front row after Jannie du Plessis and Beast Mtawarira were rested, while Renaldo Bothma replaces Jean Deysel in the final change.

A big positive for the Sharks is the return of Etienne Oosthuizen and Willem Alberts on the bench.

The team spirit in the Lions camp is driving this group to results that no one could have predicted at the start of the season. In contrast the Sharks appear to be in disarray after several big names have been ruled out due to suspension or injury.
