The RaboDirect Rebels return to AAMI Park for the first time in the 2015 Asteron Life Super Rugby competition, as they host the NSW Waratahs on Friday night at 7:30pm.

A Weary Dunlop shield challenge, the Rebels come into the game buoyed by victory over the Crusaders in Christchurch in Round One, however there is no danger of them underestimating the quality of their opposition.

The Waratahs won the 2014 Super Rugby championship, and whilst they suffered defeat at the hands of the Western Force in Sydney last week, they are an international-standard opposition. 14 of their 15 starting players on Sunday were full internationals, with a further two on the bench.

Setting the scene:

The Waratahs and Rebels have developed a healthy rivalry since Melbourne’s team first started in Super Rugby back in 2011. The significance of the Weary Dunlop Shield is lost on nobody, and the Rebels’ first ever victory over NSW back in 2013 remains a memorable occasion for all who were there.

The simple truth is this; there are no extra points on the line against rivals than if you were playing anybody else in the competition. Both teams want to win every game as strongly as possible regardless of opposition, while both possess plenty of individuals with history at both Clubs; there’s plenty to get excited for here.

Key Match Up:
In Mitch Inman and Tamati Ellison, the Rebels possess two powerful and skilful centres, and their value to the team was evident in Christchurch. They are both experienced and love the physicality of the game, and have developed a wonderful understanding of how to complement one another.

However, the Waratahs can call on two fairly handy centres themselves; internationals Kurtley Beale and Adam Ashley-Cooper. Capable of playing in multiple positions, they found their homes in the midfield for the Sky Blues in 2014, and scored plenty of points.

Whilst both midfields operate slightly differently, strong performances in that engine room may play a big part in deciding who is victorious in this clash.
